VHF, Radar and Stereo

Managing electronic instrumentation requires careful evaluation of space and connections. A VHF is an essential safety device that must comply with precise regulations; for offshore passages, the choice between a fixed-mount model with a dedicated antenna and a handheld unit with IPX7 rating changes how you operate. When installing a radar, compatibility with the existing display and power consumption become critical factors that we verify together to prevent malfunctions.

For entertainment, a marine stereo system must contend with humidity and salt. Choosing speakers with polypropylene cones and a head unit with weather-resistance certification ensures greater longevity. We support your selection by analyzing installation specifications, preventing incompatible components from compromising the integrity of the console or the NMEA 2000 network on board.

Our approach is based on verifying technical data before every shipment. We monitor actual component availability to provide you with clear ETAs, allowing you to plan your work without surprises. If you have questions about cable gauge or brand compatibility, contact us for a technical consultation: our experience is there to prevent mistaken purchases that would leave the boat tied to the dock.

Technical parameters for a correct selection

Before settling on a new instrument, consider these fundamental criteria for a lasting installation:

  • Check the IP protection rating: for open console installations, aim for devices rated IP67 or higher.
  • Check the network protocol: if the boat uses a NMEA 2000 backbone, make sure the radar or VHF is fully compatible.
  • Evaluate power consumption: on a sailboat, calculate the radar's standby draw to avoid draining the service batteries.
  • Position antennas correctly: a VHF mounted too close to a radar can experience electromagnetic interference that reduces its range.

How do I choose the output power of my new VHF?

For navigation within 6 miles of shore, a 5-6 Watt handheld VHF is often sufficient, but in open water a fixed-mount 25 Watt unit connected to a masthead antenna with low-loss cable is essential.

Is it possible to integrate systems from different brands?

Yes, thanks to standards such as NMEA 2000 many data points are shared between devices from different manufacturers, but always verify the specific compatibility of advanced features.

Why does the marine stereo stop working after one season?

The cause is often oxidation of contacts or moisture ingress; always use speakers and head units with specific protection against salt corrosion and properly seal all electrical connections.
