Marine Electrical Supplies

The marine environment is a constant challenge for any electrical system. Humidity, salt, and hull vibrations attack metal contacts, accelerating oxidation and creating intermittent faults. Every installed component must meet precise standards, not just for functionality, but to prevent fires or critical failures far from shore.

When working on a system, components must be oversized relative to the nominal load and properly protected. It is not enough to choose a suitable cable gauge; you must also select terminal lugs, junction boxes, and switches that provide a watertight seal, preventing salt from penetrating the circuits.

Nautiba supports the boater by providing technical guidance to avoid compatibility errors. If you have doubts about which circuit breaker is right for the windlass, or about the cable gauge needed to minimize voltage drop, we will work through it with you before the order ships. Product ETAs are transparent so you can plan your work without unexpected delays.

Choosing electrical components for your boat

Selecting electrical supplies leaves no room for improvisation. Before buying, always consider the operating conditions and exposure to the elements.

  • Check the IP protection rating: a device in the bilge requires a higher IP index than one mounted on an interior console.
  • Check the load capacity: for power circuits, calculate the maximum current draw in amps and oversize the cable to prevent overheating.
  • Favor tinned connectors and terminals, which offer superior durability in the marine environment against galvanic corrosion.
  • Make sure the instrumentation is compatible with your onboard network voltage, 12V or 24V, to avoid permanent damage to devices.

What to check before replacing a switch?

Always check the nominal current rating in amps, the working voltage, and the physical dimensions of the mounting cutout. Also verify that the IP protection rating is appropriate for the switch's location.

Why use tinned cables?

Tinning the copper strands protects the metal from oxidation caused by salt, ensuring optimal conductivity over time and preventing an increase in electrical resistance.

How do I avoid voltage drop?

Voltage drop depends on the cable gauge and the distance from the source. Use cables with a gauge suited to the load and run length, following marine sizing tables.
