Waterproof Bags and Cases

On board, moisture is constant and the risk of saltwater infiltration continually threatens electronic devices. Anyone who spends time at sea knows that a case must do more than keep out the rain - it must provide a secure seal against salt, the true enemy of metal contacts and circuits. We evaluate bags and cases by analyzing construction materials, pressure or hermetic sealing systems, and mechanical resistance.

Not all cases are equal. Some models offer basic protection against splashes, while others are designed to maintain their seal even after an accidental drop in water. The choice must therefore be based on the intended use: a case for a tablet at the chart table has different requirements than a dry bag for the tender, where abrasion and impacts are frequent.

At Nautiba we make sure that protection specifications are clearly stated, helping you avoid mistakes. Before purchasing, always consider the type of closure and the flexibility of the material. If you have any doubts about compatibility or the level of protection needed for your specific activity, our technical support team is available to review the product datasheets together with you.

How to Evaluate a Waterproof Case Before Buying

When selecting a case or bag for a marine environment, don't focus on aesthetics alone. The determining factor is the IP protection rating, which indicates how well the device is shielded from external agents.

  • Check the IP protection rating: an IP67 certification indicates full protection against dust and resistance to temporary submersion.
  • Inspect the closure system: double-zip or press-fit closures must be regularly maintained with fresh water to prevent salt from compromising their watertight seal.
  • Assess material thickness and transparency: if you need to use the touchscreen of a smartphone, make sure the material is compatible with capacitive interfaces.
  • Consider the internal volume: never overfill the bag, as this would prevent the gasket or roll-top closure from sealing the contents correctly.

What does IP67 protection rating mean?

The IP67 designation indicates that the item is fully protected against dust ingress and can withstand submersion in water to a depth of one meter for a limited time, typically thirty minutes.

Does a waterproof case guarantee buoyancy?

Not all cases float. Some models include integrated air chambers for buoyancy, but always verify this specific feature before assuming the item can be retrieved if dropped overboard.

How often should a dry bag be replaced?

Longevity depends on use and UV exposure. If you notice cracks in the plastic, loss of elasticity in the gaskets, or the closure no longer offers adequate resistance, the watertight seal is no longer guaranteed and the item should be replaced.
