Adhesive Tapes and Velcro

Securing something on deck or in the engine room requires an honest assessment of what your materials can handle. An ordinary adhesive tape exposed to sun and salt quickly loses its tack and leaves behind residue that is hard to remove. Velcro, in the same way, must maintain consistent mechanical hold even under the constant stress and vibrations of the engine.

Our hands-on workshop experience has taught us that every substrate calls for specific preparation. Gelcoat, AISI 316 stainless steel, and engineered plastics each respond differently to adhesives. Before applying any tape, the surface must be clean, degreased, and dry. Skipping those steps defeats the bond of any product, no matter how advanced it is.

Choosing the right fastening system

Tape or velcro selection depends almost entirely on the application. There is no universal product, but there are components tested to hold up in the harsh marine environment. Always consider direct UV exposure, which rapidly degrades synthetic rubbers, and the peel load the velcro will face if used to secure onboard equipment or inspection panels.

  • Always check the tape's heat resistance: elevated temperatures in the engine room will compromise non-specific adhesives.
  • For velcro, prefer versions with a reinforced adhesive backing for applications on non-planar surfaces or areas subject to vibration.
  • If you need to protect wiring, use self-amalgamating tapes that create a watertight seal and prevent moisture from reaching the copper.
  • Before applying, always use a dedicated degreaser to clean the surface, or the chemical bond will not form correctly.

How do you prepare surfaces before application?

Always use a marine degreaser or isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth. Make sure no wax, grease, or moisture remains on the surface, or the adhesive will not be able to bond properly.

Does adhesive velcro hold up outdoors?

There are specific types with high-bond acrylic adhesive, but the surface must be perfectly smooth and the velcro must not be continuously submerged in water.

What does self-amalgamating tape mean?

It is a tape that uses no glue, but fuses to itself to form a single unified body. It is ideal for emergency repairs on hoses or for sealing electrical connections against water ingress.
