Screws and Rivets

On board, every screw or rivet you fasten is a promise of holding power that must withstand wave action and the chemical aggression of salt. Using unsuitable hardware triggers oxidation processes that compromise the integrity of cleats, stanchions, and hinges. AISI 316 stainless steel is the required standard for resisting chloride attack, thanks to its molybdenum content that protects the metal structure.

The problem is often the pairing of dissimilar metals. Fitting a stainless steel screw on an aluminum plate without isolation creates a galvanic cell that destroys the softer metal. At Nautiba, we see how incorrect selection leads to costly repairs that could have been avoided with a careful choice of head type, thread form, and diameter matched to the substrate thickness.

Criteria for selecting the right fasteners

Whether you are doing a repair or a new installation, do not rely on guesswork. Always consider these factors to ensure long-lasting fastening:

• Material: always use AISI 316 for externally exposed components; AISI 304 is limited to protected interior areas.
• Galvanic pairing: if fastening to aluminum, always isolate the fitting to prevent currents that corrode the substrate.
• Head type: choose a countersunk head for flush surfaces, or a pan or dome head for applications where greater clamping force is needed.
• Diameter and thread pitch: verify they are consistent with the substrate thickness; a screw that is too short will not grip, one that is too long may interfere with underlying systems.

Our pre-sales advice is designed to prevent compatibility errors. If you are installing a new accessory, check the type of fastening required by the manufacturer. We help you determine whether you need a watertight rivet or a countersunk screw, evaluating the specifications required for your boat.

Which material should I choose for exterior use?

For all installations on deck or in exposed locations, AISI 316 stainless steel remains the only option for its corrosion resistance, which is superior to AISI 304.

How do I prevent galvanic corrosion?

The primary prevention is to electrically isolate the two dissimilar metals using nylon washers or isolating compounds between the screw and the substrate.

Is it better to use screws or rivets?

The choice depends on access to the back of the substrate: if you cannot reach the back to insert a nut, a watertight rivet is often the most effective solution for permanent fastenings.

How do I make sure compatibility is correct?

Before ordering, always check the thickness of the material to be fastened and the type of hole already present; our technical team is available to help you verify the specifications before shipping.
