Fishfinders, GPS, and Chart Plotters

Choosing a fishfinder or a chart plotter is a critical moment, because these instruments are the eyes of your boat. There is no point in mounting the most complex display if it cannot be integrated with the correct transducer or the NMEA 2000 network already on board. At Nautiba, drawing on our technical experience, we always recommend starting with an analysis of the installation spaces and the type of navigation, whether coastal or offshore.

Many mistakes arise from incompatibility between instrument communication protocols or from a wrong transducer frequency choice, which can render the fishfinder blind or noisy. If your boat is over nine meters or you frequently navigate over deep bottoms, the transducer output and whether it is a through-hull or transom-mount installation drastically affect signal clarity on screen. Always consider the IP protection rating, critical for units mounted on an exposed outdoor helm station subject to direct spray.

Our working method includes dedicated pre-sales support to avoid exactly these problems. Before you confirm the order, we make sure the technical specifications of your new instrument pair well with those already installed. We provide precise information on availability timelines, distinguishing between what we have in stock and what comes directly from distribution centers, so you can plan the installation without tying your boat up at the yard.

Technical parameters for a reliable system

When selecting instrumentation, evaluate these technical aspects to ensure a balanced and durable system:

  • Check the transducer type: the frequency in kHz determines depth range and detail, while the mounting type (in-hull, through-hull, or transom) must be compatible with the hull bottom.
  • Verify NMEA 2000 compatibility: if you intend to connect the GPS to other instruments, this standard is essential for ensuring communication between devices.
  • Consider the IP protection rating: for external installations, look for devices with IPX7 certification or higher, which guarantees resistance to temporary immersion.
  • Analyze supported charts: not all plotters read every map format; always verify that the card reader is compatible with the charts you regularly use.

Transducer selection

The choice depends on the hull and the type of fishing or navigation. For fiberglass boats, through-hull transducers can be used, while for aluminum or wooden hulls the options are more limited. Transom mounting is the simplest, but it is sensitive to disturbed water flow from the propeller.

NMEA 2000 data integration

It is not mandatory, but it is recommended for data integration. If you want to see engine data, wind, or AIS on the plotter, the NMEA 2000 standard makes the connection plug-and-play compared to older analog wiring.

Display sizing

The size depends on console space and viewing distance. A 7-inch display is sufficient for small boats, but if you need to view charts, a fishfinder, and radar simultaneously, a 9 or 12-inch screen reduces eye strain and improves data management.

Remember that every installation is unique. If you have doubts about connector compatibility or signal range based on hull material, contact us for a technical check before placing your order, to avoid returns or unnecessary complications during dockside installation.
