Lines, Sheets, and Cordage

Every boater knows that cordage is under constant working load and exposed to weathering. Polyester, for example, remains the benchmark for mooring lines thanks to its UV resistance and low stretch, while nylon is valued for its ability to absorb sudden gusts due to its greater elasticity. The choice shouldn't be made by habit but by analyzing the required breaking load and your hull's specifications.

The distinction between a mainsheet and a stern mooring line is clear: the former requires low stretch to maintain sail shape, the latter must cushion the boat's movements. At Nautiba we support your pre-sales technical questions, helping you verify compatibility with your blocks or winches. Every catalog entry includes the data needed to avoid wrong purchases, with certainty of receiving materials on time.

When maintaining cordage, always check the areas subject to chafing on cleats or mooring bollards. An experienced eye knows that a braid showing signs of stiffening or visible fraying has lost its original mechanical properties. Don't wait for a break to occur during a critical maneuver before deciding to replace your on-board supply.

How to Navigate Cordage Selection

Making the right cordage purchase means analyzing a few key technical variables before you buy:

• Consider your boat's length and displacement to determine the working load needed for mooring lines.
• Evaluate material based on use: high-tenacity polyester for durability and strength, nylon for elasticity and shock absorption.
• Verify diameter against the size of your cleats, fairleads, and blocks on board.
• Prefer double-braid constructions for easier handling and greater resistance to mechanical abrasion.

What material is best for mooring lines?

Polyester is generally the preferred choice for its excellent UV and salt resistance, ensuring a long service life even when the boat sits exposed to the sun for extended periods. If you need more damping, nylon is preferred for its elasticity.

How can I tell if a line needs replacing?

A line should be replaced when it shows clear signs of wear, localized fraying, or when it feels stiff to the touch. Loss of elasticity is an unambiguous sign that the fibers have experienced excessive stress and no longer guarantee the required safety.

Is line diameter important?

Yes, diameter must be proportional not only to the breaking load but also to the size of your cleats and fairleads. A line that is too thick might not run smoothly, while one that is too thin might be difficult to handle or could damage deck hardware.
