How to choose the right snubber

The selection must be based on the boat's displacement and the diameter of the line used. A snubber that is too stiff does not work; one that is too soft hits its travel limit too quickly and loses its function. Always check the manufacturer's specs in relation to the boat you own.

  • Evaluate the material: rubber models offer progressive elasticity, while AISI 316 steel-spring models provide greater corrosion resistance but require periodic maintenance to prevent squeaking.
  • Check displacement: do not significantly oversize or undersize the device relative to the boat's length and weight.
  • Make sure line insertion is easy: some models require handling the eye of the line, while others allow quick installation without untying knots.
  • Check available space: if you moor in tight slips, factor in the snubber's footprint to avoid damaging contact with the hull during maneuvers.

What happens if the snubber hits its travel limit?

When the device reaches maximum compression or extension, it stops absorbing shock. At that point, the full load is transferred directly to the cleat. If this happens frequently, the device is too small for your boat.

Is a steel spring always better than rubber?

Not necessarily. AISI 316 stainless steel holds up well against corrosion over time, but if it is not lubricated it can make irritating noise. Rubber is quieter and does not scratch the hull, but it can dry out and crack over time due to UV exposure.

Is it necessary to lubricate the steel springs?

Yes, light periodic lubrication with marine-grade products helps keep the movement smooth, prevents surface corrosion, and reduces the metallic noise caused by the coils rubbing together.

Can I install two snubbers on the same line?

We advise against series installation, as a more complex mooring system makes it harder to identify which component is failing. It is better to use a single snubber correctly sized for the expected load on that line.
