Emergency Ladders

Safety at sea allows no shortcuts, and the emergency ladder is a piece of equipment that is often underestimated until you actually need it. When you are in the water, the boat's freeboard can become an insurmountable obstacle if you do not have a proper foothold and handhold to pull yourself back on board. A good emergency ladder must be deployable from outside without needing assistance from someone on board, and must allow even a non-athletic person to haul themselves over the edge.

Over the years in our workshop we have seen too many installations blocked by salt-encrusted lines or release systems that are too stiff. When choosing this component, do not just look at price or aesthetics - focus on how easily the system releases from its container. Verify that the ladder length is adequate for your freeboard: it must reach deep enough below the waterline to allow a stable foothold, reducing the physical effort needed for re-boarding.

Maintenance is just as important as the initial choice. If the ladder is stored in a rigid or fabric container, periodically check that the retaining lines have not been degraded by sun exposure and that the opening mechanism is not seized with salt. At Nautiba we prefer systems that allow quick inspection and periodic rinsing. Before placing an order, make sure you have the space needed for mounting in a position where a person overboard can easily reach it, preferably near the stern area or where the freeboard is most accessible.

If you have doubts about fastening compatibility with your stern or do not know which model is most suitable for your freeboard height, ask us for support. Our technical team analyzes the construction specifications to help you avoid mistaken purchases, providing clear information on actual delivery times for each catalog item.

What to verify before installing the ladder

  • Check that the mounting point is solid and does not interfere with the correct movement of the rudder or propeller.
  • Verify that the opening system is intuitive: in an emergency you will not have time to read instructions.
  • Make sure the length is sufficient to allow a person in the water to get at least one foot onto the first step.
  • Prefer materials resistant to salt corrosion for metal parts, favoring AISI 316 stainless steel.

How should an emergency ladder be deployed?

The system must allow activation via a handle or a line that is reachable directly by the person in the water, without having to climb onto the boat or ask for outside assistance.

Is a fixed or a retractable ladder better?

For emergency use, the ladder must always be ready but protected from the elements. Retractable versions in a rigid container or bag are often the most suitable for preserving materials from sun and salt.

What is the ideal depth?

The ladder should extend at least 40-50 cm below the waterline at light displacement, so as to ensure a comfortable foothold even in rough seas or when the boat is heeling.

How often should the system be checked?

At least once a season, verify that the deployment lines have not deteriorated and that the release mechanism is not blocked by salt or oxidation, by performing a dry deployment test.
